Colleges/universities look at your grades/transcript beginning your Freshman year!
Every school year meet with your Professional School Counselor to go over your transcript and high school credits.
There are many tutoring services available at AHA to help with your academics.
If you happen to fail a class, make sure you talk to your Professional School Counselor to register for a Credit Recovery Class or Summer School.
Why is it important to get involved in extra-curricular/community service activities during your high school years?
It shows employers, committees, and colleges you are more then just a student. Many students balance school and additional responsibilities. This includes activities, athletics, work, achievements, and community service hours.
Keep track of all that you do! It is easy to forget and important to remember. This information can help you get a better job, into your dream college and scholarships. Make sure that you track all your information so it will be easy to transfer the information to scholarships, letters of recommendations, etc. Use the Activity Log Sheet below.
College & Career Timelines

juniors
By your Junior year narrow down your top 3 career options. Plan to take the ACT and SAT even if you are unsure about attending college. Try a dual credit course and continue to stay involved. Work hard to improve your GPA and plan ahead for your Senior year. What is your "why"?
A recommendation letter is written by a teacher, employer, counselor, coach, or someone who can vouch for your abilities, aptitude and achievements. Recommendation letters can be required for a variety of opportunities such as a job, college application, scholarships, acceptance into a club or activity, etc.
Be thoughtful when you choose your recommenders.
- Make sure you give them optimal time to complete your letter of recommendation (At least 2 weeks).
- Provide them with a completed AHA Letter of Recommendation form, resume and transcript.
- It takes work to complete a quality recommendation letter. Remember to thank your recommender(s).
